The Walt Whitman Houses were originally built for the World War II war effort in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.  Located near the Brooklyn Navy Yard, these houses were quickly built to house shipyard workers.  This Brooklyn neighborhood is known for being a place of rich African-American culture.  The likes of Spike Lee, Erykah Badu and Rosie Perez have lived in Fort Greene.  Myrtle Avenue marks a distinct dividing line between the public housing and the brownstones of Fort Greene, showing clear signs of gentrification in the neighborhood.
