At first, the applicants were mostly World Was II veterans under the Taft-Ellender-Wagner Housing Act and it was named after a 4th century saint who is said to have performed miracles. The Apollo Theater on 125th street, P.S. 154 The Harriet Tubman Charter School and Harlem Mother’s, an anti-violence non-profit organization, surround the housing complex. Residents have access to a child health center, community center sponsored by the Harlem’s Children’s Zone and senior center located within the complex. Currently, NYCHA and Harlem Children’s Zone are building a 10 million dollar school in the cul-de-sac on 129th street. Community Board 10 and the 32nd precinct covers the houses, and the resident’s association is governed by Willie Mae Lewis.
