Wagner Houses

Name: Senator Robert F. Wagner Houses

Location: 2396 First Avenue, Manhattan, 10035

Population: 5,290

Number of Residential Buildings: 22

Year Established: 1958

The Wagner Houses comprise the largest NYCHA development in East Harlem. Just over half of the residents are of Hispanic descent, about 45 percent of residents are African American, and newly immigrated Asian communities make up 3 percent of the population. Wagner hosts activities at the Senior Center and Day Care Center for residents year round. Members of this tight-knit community can often be seen playing dominos or cards outside on a sunny day. The neighborhood surrounding Wagner has recently experienced an influx of gentrification – with new high-rise complexes, restaurants and businesses. Two years ago, the highly anticipated East River Plaza shopping complex opened just blocks away from the development. Spanish Harlem still maintains its deep activist and cultural roots with a lively arts and music scene.
