Vickie Remoe

Vickie Remoe covers the Patterson Houses in Mott Haven, the Bronx.

When Vickie was young, her mother was convinced that she would become a teacher. As a child, she played “professor,” making the sofa cushions her pupils. Vickie did end up teaching for four years at various schools in her home country, but she wanted to take her passion for educating and invest it in a larger audience.Vickie was born in Sierra Leone.  She moved to the United States at the age of 12 to pursue an education, as a civil war raged back home.

Vickie attended Haverford College in Haverford, Pennsylvania, majoring in political science and post-colonial French literature. She returned to Sierra Leone in 2007 as the transitional government was coming into power, hoping to contribute to the country’s rebirth. There, she found a community of people so busy with their own lives, they often didn’t know what was happening outside of their town or socio-economic class. Vickie’s interests in teaching and storytelling led her to start her own television show “The Vickie Remoe Show.” She took “The Vickie Remoe” show on the road through five countries in West Africa, covering everything from reproductive health to sports.

Vickie came to Columbia Journalism School to hone her storytelling skills. She hopes that, with these skills, she can uncover a treasure trove of stories that were hidden in plain sight.
