Thad Novak

Thad Novak was exposed to journalism at a young age, as his father was an editor and movie critic for People magazine. Despite this early exposure, Novak didn’t have journalism in his sights as a student. He got a Bachelor of Science degree in English and molecular biophysics and biochemistry at Yale thad-bioUniversity, then he attained a doctorate in biochemistry and molecular biology from the University of Chicago.

After years of toiling away at lab experiments, Novak discovered he didn’t want to spend his life doing scientific research. For him, it was more exciting to explain the results of experiments, which was a springboard to journalism school. Novak plans to combine his extensive scientific knowledge with the skills of the journalist, hoping one day to translate complicated scientific concepts into easily understandable information for the general public.

Novak grew up in Tenafly, New Jersey, which gave him ready access to New York City and Broadway theatre. He loves musicals, his favorite being Les Miserables. Novak met his fiancee at a show in Chicago, and now they reside in New Haven, Conn., where she is a first-year law student at Yale.

In his free time Novak loves to play video games and watch sports, especially the Chicago Cubs. If he doesn’t end up covering science as a journalist, he may pursue a career in sports writing or broadcasting.
