Shreeya Sinha

Shreeya Sinha has been on a journey of new experiences, new friendships, and a new way of looking at the world. Born in New Delhi, India, Sinha has spent a good part of her life moving. She has lived in Nigeria, Zimbabwe and Vietnam. One of her more intimate experiences came out of Zimbabwe, where she spent six-and-a-half  years, the longest Sinha has lived in one location. She fondly remembers the Zimbabwe she knew and loved before it fell from opportunity into poverty.

After finishing high school in the Himalayas, Sinha journeyed overseas to the United States. As a student at Brandeis University in Boston, Mass., Sinha majored in political science and international relations. She also studied abroad at the London School of Economics. While in college, she was elected student government president, serving as the first international student in that role.  Another profound memory of her undergraduate experience was a trip to Israel and the West Bank. Funded by Jimmy Carter’s foundation, Sinha lived in a refugee camp and reported on those impacted by the conflict. During her trip, she met an impoverished boy who she says inspired her to pursue a career in journalism. “The ability to give a voice to the voiceless and shed the media’s light on dark places is why I want to be a journalist,” says Sinha.

Since her trip, Sinha has had several experiences that have solidified her passion for journalism. She interned twice for the executive producer at India’s CNBC-TV18. Sinha was also assigned to the international desk at CNN-IBN, CNN’s sister channel in India. While in London, Sinha investigated the transparency of oil and gas companies and the transparency of revenue sharing with host governments.

Now, as a graduate student at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, Sinha says she is looking forward to working and learning from the best of the best, and touching the lives of those she encounters in the vibrant city she now calls home.
