Nic Stone

Nic Stone covers the Bushwick Houses in Brooklyn.

A native of Australia, Nic notes that the writers he admires were somewhat nomadic. So far, Nic’s career has taken a similar path.

After graduating from the University of Sydney in 2008 with concentrations in English, performance studies, and media studies, Nic left home and hasn’t returned except on the occasional visit. Professionally and recreationally, Nic has travelled extensively in Central America and Southeast Asia, and he has held jobs in India, South Korea and Germany.

He was a writer at the International Herald Tribune in Seoul, worked for pv magazine in Berlin, and was a reporter for Mid Day (which Nic describes as a “trashy but awesome tabloid”) in Bangalore. While living in India, Nic met a person worth $1 billion, broke an exclusive front-page story, and met the Australian cricketer Brett Lee at a bar in Bangalore.

Some of Nic’s fondest experiences abroad have included hanging out with the local residents and exchanging stories over some home-brewed concoction.

At Columbia Journalism School, Nic is pursuing his Masters degree with a concentration in magazine writing. He is interested in writing long-form narratives and features that offer fresh insights on important issues in the world. His ideal vision of his future after Columbia would involve starting his own publication or working for a major weekly magazine.
