Hema Parmar

Hema Parmar covers the Marble Hill Homes in Marble Hill, the Bronx.

Hema is a Canadian journalist and producer who has covered national, provincial and local stories. She is currently completing her Masters degree at the Columbia Journalism School in New York City.

Before moving to Manhattan, Hema spent more than two years covering the energy sector as reporter and producer for Alberta Primetime,  a current affairs show broadcast on CTV2 (Canadian Television). Her beat included resource economics, public policy and politics. Hema also field-produced Alberta Primetime’s budget day show for three years.  Her interest in online journalism lead her to also work as fill-in web-reporter and fill-in writer for CTV Edmonton News. It was at Canada’s national morning news program, Canada AM, that Hema had her first taste of producing international and national news segments.

Hema was born in England and raised near Toronto, Canada. Of Indian descent, her family is from Zambia and Kenya.  Hema’s love of travel has led her to study in both Kenya and Spain.  She is passionate about international news, particularly issues of economic development and human rights.

Hema is one of 18 women accepted into the 2011-2012 Women’s International Leadership Program, at the International House in New York City – a fellowship that seeks to prepare women for the challenges they may face as future leaders.

Hema is a member of the Society of Professional Journalists and the South Asian Journalists Association.  She graduated with honors from the University of Western Ontario with a double major in Comparative Literature and Media Information Technoculture, and a minor in Spanish.  A salsa and Latin ballroom dancer, Hema also plays the piano and speaks Spanish and Gujarati.
