Courtney Streett
Courtney Streett is determined and spontaneous. Streett embodies these characteristics in her personal and professional life, whether covering issues of diversity in her beat, Fort Greene and Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn, or bringing NYCinFocus the latest story. Prior to her current reporting, Streett interned twice for WBZ-TV, the CBS affiliate station in Boston. There, she worked at the assignment desk and in special events.
Streett is a graduate student at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. She is pursuing an M.S. with a concentration in broadcast. Streett graduated from Wellesley College in December 2008 with majors in both environmental studies and Africana studies. Upon graduating from Columbia, she hopes to report on environmental issues.
Streett’s passion for environmental justice is grounded in her diverse background on the subject. She taught rising high school students environmental science, committed to year-long research projects and presentations on environmental issues at Wellesley, and became one of only two student speakers at an International Environmental Justice Symposium on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
Streett also enjoys an eclectic mix of hobbies. She likes picking blackberries with her father and enjoys quality time with her mother, an elected official in Streett’s home state of Delaware. In high school, Streett was a state tennis champion, and these days, Streett dubs herself, “The Queen of Spontaneity.” In 2008, she decided to run in the Boston Marathon without prior training. For Streett, every day is a pleasure and telling the stories of those who are voiceless is a privilege.
