Chao Deng
Chao Deng could never decide on the one subject she wanted to pursue in life—until she found journalism. Now she’s covering a science story one day and profiling a resident in Chinatown the next day. She says she loves how journalism stretches one’s mind around a range of topics.
Deng was born in China and raised in England and Newton, Mass. She graduated from Brown University, where she double majored in economics and neuroscience. Deng’s discovered her passion for journalism during an internship at CNN’s Beijing Bureau. Back in the States, she later interned at WPRI-TV in East Providence, R.I. where she worked at the station’s assignment desk and consumer affairs unit.
Now at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, Deng continues to hone her craft. She’s especially interested in writing about health and science as well as economics and business. Deng says that someday after graduation, she may end up reporting from Asia.
As an avid ballroom dancer, Deng hopes to continue dancing throughout her journalistic pursuits. She loves the rumba as well as a good salsa. Deng has also played classical piano for many years. One of her favorite pieces is Pachelbel’s famous “Canon in D major.”
