Carmel DeAmicis
Carmel DeAmicis covers the Farragut Houses in Dumbo, Brooklyn. She can be found there most Sundays, belting Baptist hymns at the local church and receiving history lessons from feisty seniors.
Previously, Carmel worked as a news reporter for City 7 TV, an English speaking station based in Dubai. Moving to the United Arab Emirates marked Carmel’s first time out of America, and the experience was life changing. Carmel’s favorite moments include meeting a child bride who escaped an abusive husband, interviewing the organizer of the Gaza Freedom Flotilla, and petting a cheetah. Prior to that, Carmel covered arts and culture in the rapidly developing capital, Abu Dhabi, for Time Out Magazine. There, she learned the art of the Irish skip from the David McCabe, the new “Lord of the Dance,” and ventured into the city’s illicit underground belly dancing scene. These and other feature pieces were reprinted in Time Out Dubai, Doha, and Bahrain.
After returning from the Middle East, Carmel moved to New York for an internship with The Nation magazine where she fact-checked many articles about the Arab Spring.
Carmel graduated from UC Berkeley with a B.A. in a self-designed major, Language and Identity. During that time, she wrote a weekly column on gender and sex for the university newspaper The Daily Californian, receiving a regional Society of Professional Journalists excellence award.
Carmel has a black belt in Hapkido, a Korean martial art. She’s also an avid foodie, runner, and Harry Potter nerd. You can follow her on Twitter @carmeldeamicis.
