Marble Hill Houses

Name: Marble Hill Houses

Location: 5220 Broadway, Bronx NY, 10463

Population: 3,433

Number of Residential Buildings: 11

Year Established: 1952

The Marble Hill Houses sit in the West Bronx neighborhood of Marble Hill and has 1,682 apartments. Due to where jurisdictional lines are drawn, representation of the 11 Marble Hill buildings is split between three council members: Oliver Koppell, Ydanis Rodriguez and Fernando Cabrera. Marble Hill is located at the southwestern tip of the Bronx, just north of Manhattan.  Originally Marble Hill was part of Manhattan, until the Harlem Ship Canal was completed in 1895, which divided it from the island. The creek north of Marble Hill was later filled in and thus Marble Hill was physically joined to the Bronx. Politically, the community remains part of Manhattan. Residents are represented by Manhattan councilmen, but have a Bronx zip code and are part of Bronx community boards. This had lead to a long-standing debate over if Marble Hill is part of Manhattan or the Bronx. Next year will mark the 60th anniversary since the buildings were built.
