Lorenzo Franceschi Bicchierai

Lorenzo Franceschi Bicchierai covers the Riis Houses in the East Village, Manhattan.

Prior to moving to New York, Lorenzo spent the past 11 years in Barcelona, Spain, where he was born to Italian parents.

Lorenzo did not always plan on becoming a journalist. At the University of Barcelona, he studied law for five years—an experience he describes as “excruciating.”

He enjoys Columbia much more than Law School, and in the future hopes to move back to Europe and apply his education background and language skills to work as a freelance journalist writing in English, Spanish and Italian.

Over the past few years, Lorenzo has contributed regular sports commentary to the Italian-language website PlayItUsa.com as well as Bright Side of the Sun, a blog about the Phoenix Suns and Barca Blaugranes, a blog devoted to European soccer team F.C. Barcelona. Earlier this year, he published an article about WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange in L’espresso magazine and co-wrote another article about Assange for Linkiesta.it.

Lorenzo specializes in magazine writing at Columbia. He hopes to one day write for publications like The New Yorker, Wired, The Atlantic Monthly and ESPN The Magazine. In addition to sports Lorenzo is also interested in writing about science, politics and cultural affairs.
