Hip hop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa grew up in the Bronx River Houses, where he founded the famed rap crew Soulsonic Force. Later, Bambaata also founded the Zulu Nation at the Bronx River Houses. Thousands of members of the hip-hop organization met in the community center for over twenty years—until the City of New York, which classified the group as a gang, banned them from doing so in 1996.
